Academic Research Opportunities
Human Biology Research Exploration Program (HB-REX)
HB-REX is a research opportunity for declared Human Biology majors and intended for students following completion of their sophomore year and the HumBio core. Students are mentored by research labs in a variety of subjects, ranging from natural and social sciences to engineering and medicine. No prior research experience is necessary. Accepted students will work full-time for 10 weeks throughout the summer and are granted a stipend for their work. The program culminates with a poster symposium in August, where students will learn about how to create and present scientific work.
The application opens the first week of January and is due January 31st, 2023. Students may apply for up to three projects.
Bio-X Undergraduate Summer Research Program (Bio-X SURP)
The Bio-X research program awards the equivalent of a VPUE grant to students for a full-time, 10-week summer research project. While no prior research experience is necessary, students must coordinate with a lab ahead of applying and submit plans for both in-person and remote project options for the upcoming summer. The program includes weekly faculty discussions and research sessions and culminates in a research showcase. Additional optional sessions include learning more about the basics of research, writing a manuscript, and lab training.
The application is now open and is due at 5 pm PST on January 18th, 2023. Applications must have a Bio-X affiliated faculty mentor, which can be found on the Bio-X website listed below.
2023 Canary CREST Program
The Canary Center at Stanford is a world-class research center dedicated to early cancer detection. To train the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists, we offer a unique summer research training opportunity for undergraduate students, namely, the Canary Cancer Research Education Summer Training (CREST) Program. Funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the program offers a 10-week research experience in one of our state-of-the art labs. Each participant will be matched with a Faculty mentor who will help them craft a research project. Senior scientists and postdoctoral fellows will assist the Faculty in supervising and mentoring the students in the lab. The successful applicant can expect to work in a dynamic lab environment on challenging projects that involve a broad range of research techniques. Additionally, students will learn about the field of cancer early detection (from in vitro diagnostics to in vivo molecular imaging) through specially-designed short classroom sessions, as well as participate in professional development and career seminars. The program culminates with a Symposium, where students present individual posters on their research projects in front of their peers, faculty and lab mentors, and other Stanford scientists.
Applications are due February 6th, 2023!
Volunteer/Service Opportunities
ACE (Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program)
The ACE program is a joint program specifically for Stanford and Duke student-athletes interested in engaging in international service experiences. As a student-athlete, it can be difficult to find time to study or travel abroad during the school year and summer. ACE is providing virtual and in-person experiences this summer with several international partners including South Africa, Costa Rica, Vietnam, and Thailand, where student-athletes work on various projects. More details on this program are coming shortly. Potential themes include coaching, education, environmental sustainability, and health outreach/education.
Applications are due February 1st, 2023 with more information regarding the 2023 in-person program released on the ACE website and social media (@aceathletes).
Several members of AIMS have participated in ACE to date. If you have questions regarding the application and the ACE experience, email Emily Schultz (schultz3@stanford.edu).
2022-2023 Haas Community-Based Research Fellowship (CBR)
“CBR is a method of conducting academic research that 1) relies on cooperation and communication between all research partners; 2) validates multiple sources of knowledge; 3) promotes the use of multiple methods of discovery; 4) pursues diverse means for disseminating research findings; 5) centers the experiences and empowerment of oppressed communities; and 6) includes a commitment to social action. In the ideal CBR project, academic scholars work in collaboration with community partners at every stage of the research process.” This program is for students looking to present a research project idea that involves a community-based research approach. Accepted students will be granted a $7,500 stipend + $1,500 need-based supplement (if you qualify).
The application deadline is February 11, 2023, at 11:59 pm PST for a summer quarter project plan.

More Opportunities!
Stanford Medical Scribe Fellowship (COMET) Program
We are looking for candidates who are academically strong, with excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, who desire an intensive direct patient care experience before applying to medical school, physician assistant school, nursing school, or other graduate school in the healthcare field. Scribing is an unparalleled way to build clinical experience and be immersed in medicine. The COMET Fellowship provides fellows the ability to connect with faculty and develop a mentoring relationship, as well as the opportunity to engage in research or other scholarly pursuits.
One of the goals of the COMET Fellowship is to support our fellows' professional growth. COMET fellows may choose to pursue external part-time employment opportunities or academic classes in addition to their regular COMET scribing duties. At the end of the fellowship year and based on performance, fellows are eligible to apply for a one year leadership role as a COMET Chief Scribe overseeing teams of our scribes.
NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research
The NIH (National Institutes of Health) is offering a summer internship program allowing students to work one-on-one with top scientists at the NIH. Various internships cover topics such as social sciences, biology, chemistry, computational biology, and biostatistics. Internships are a minimum of 8 weeks, beginning in May or June with a paid stipend for your work. Their website will be updated with whether this summer (2023) will include in-person or remote programs.
