Pre-med opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic

2021-2022

Listed below are both remote and in-person opportunities that are available during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We understand that it’s been difficult to volunteer and shadow in person like before, so we’ve compiled a list of ways you can get involved during this time!

Contact us with any questions or additional medically-related opportunities you’ve found during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Volunteering

HelpTestBayArea

HelpTestBayArea is aiming to set up and distribute COVID-19 testing across the Bay Area. Visit their website to add your personal and professional skills as they may be needed in various areas of their testing process. As a volunteer, tasks may include putting together testing kits for schools, signing people in to be tested, and organizing supplies and PPE.

The group is based out of the Bay Area, but locations differ based on volunteer needs. Visit their website below to learn more about volunteering:

Coveducation

With the shift to virtual learning during the pandemic, many students and parents don’t have the same access to proper online education and tutoring. Coveducation is a platform for parents to connect with volunteer tutors for students of all ages on a variety of topics. As a volunteer, you can create a profile with subjects and the levels you feel comfortable tutoring at. When a parent requests you, the platform will guide you through setting up weekly tutoring sessions.

Headway Foundation

Headway Foundation is an international non-profit formed by former student-athletes “working together to combat concussions and whiplash injuries.” Through concussion education, awareness, and support, Headway has created a community within the sports world for those who’ve experienced concussions. Headway recently launched a Headway Athlete program for student-athletes interested in promoting and sharing concussion educational material through social media and website promotions.

Headway in an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

If you’re interested, check out Headway on Instagram at @headwayfdn, and on their website below to get more involved as a volunteer. This is a great remote option.

CoachArt

CoachArt has launched a virtual program during the pandemic to offer free arts and athletics programming to families that have been impacted by chronic illness. As a volunteer, you will engage with a child you’re paired with on skills ranging from dance, creative writing, athletics, and more! CoachArt will help you make lesson plans as you will commit to one lesson per week for a minimum of 8 weeks.

Perfusion CPR: CPR Education and Advocacy

The Perfusion CPR program allows you to equip individuals in the low-resource areas near Stanford with the ability to save lives during emergency situations. Create an evidence base for future reform of Bay Area high school CPR education via data-driven insights. This opportunity allows you to become a confident public health educator!

Shadowing

eShadowing

While many hospitals and clinics have halted their shadowing programs for pre-med students, this is a completely virtual option that offers weekly sessions with a variety of physicians who discuss their path to medicine and their current specialty. Many physicians will also discuss relevant cases that they’ve worked on and will cover the medical terminology needed. For each session, you will register on their website to receive the Zoom link and can fill out a short quiz after the session to get your shadowing hours verified.
